One Thing You Should Do Each Day to Feel Healthier & Happier

 In Injury Reduction

Have you ever wondered what the simplest thing for getting healthy is?

Look no further, because once you’ve read this article you will know!

A lot of patients we see are always on the look out for new ways to feel great, and to have a healthier lifestyle. This is especially common on the back of having experienced an injury, whether that be an ankle injury that stopped them from running or a bad back that has had them resting up for a few days.

But when it comes to health, many of us have the tendency to over complicate things! We think about what foods we should fill our trolleys with at the supermarket, what exercise routines we should do, which blender is best for creating our healthy juices, the list is endless. Unfortunately, this is the hard approach, and we are here to tell you that there is a much simpler way.

As humans, we want results fast (this includes us at ProSport Physiotherapy), but thats often the primary reason as to why we give up on any new habits we undertake very quickly. When it comes to our health, as with everything in life the key is consistency.

As we come to the tail end of the year, new years resolutions begin to be discussed and decided upon. It’s true that 92% of all resolutions get dropped within the first few weeks of a new year. There is no point in having a new years resolution to start a rigorous exercise and diet plan only to stop doing it a few weeks later and fail to follow through.

The key is slow and steady progress, this will help keep you on the right track towards being healthier as well as happier. Wanting the quick and easy option only makes it harder.

Getting Healthy the Easy and Most Sustainable Way

The easy approach is much different – you take a habit, or a behaviour you want to put into action and make it so small you simply cannot give up!

A popular example is eating less processed sugar. Many people want to incorporate this habit into their daily life but brush it aside after a week or two.

Why?

Simply because the task at hand is too tough, and the habit being changed is too large. People throw all the sugar in the house into the bin and banish it completely.

A better approach would be to begin slow. Start by cutting out certain processed foods one at a time and as you progress add more to that list. This habit begins small and progresses at a rate that you are comfortable with making it easier to keep in check.

Although this may not work for everyone because we’re all different when it comes to building and stopping habits – its a great tactic that works for many people as a start point.

The point of this article is not focused on removing sugar from your diet. Its about another habit that you can change this new year that is very simple but also very effective with many positive effects attached to it. It’s something you mostly likely do most days, but potentially you’re just not doing enough.

It’s Walking

Getting healthy is all about the small things you do everyday. The small things that don’t require much work, but add up overtime. Walking can be a huge contributor to that, it is a form of exercise but it doesn’t tend to feel that way.

You walk to your car, you walk at home, you walk around your work place – walking is already a habit, you just need to increase the amount of it you do.

Let’s give you some benefits of walking, short and simple:

1. Walking gets you moving

…and everybody knows how important this is. We spend an average of 9 hours a day sitting which isn’t good for our bodies! When you are walking you are not sitting, which is a good thing for getting healthy.

2. Your muscles get used

Using your muscles will keep your body moving. If you live a sedentary lifestyle, the chances are you’re increasing your risk of suffering from something like a bad back. Lets face it, if you could avoid that you would!

3. It helps you feel relaxed

Getting fresh air will make you feel more relaxed and less stressed.

Walking has many many positive effects, but you’ll find out the rest for yourself.

Because we at ProSport Physiotherapy want you to begin this habit as soon as possible, here are a few ideas to get you started.

Begin Slow

Dont think a 5 minute walk is a waste of time, because its not! Begin slowly with 5 minutes and if you enjoy it, increase it next time to 10 minutes.

Use Your Legs More

If you drive to work, park your car further away and walk the rest. Even better, if your workplace is close, ditch the car altogether.

At The Weekend

Take a long walk at the weekend. Take your family or a good friend and just walk. Meet up and walk to a cafe or a park close by. Update each other on what’s new. This combines walking and your social life as well!

When Abroad

Whilst you’re on holiday, don’t take a taxi or the public transport. Walk through the city, see the sites, take them in and even talk to the locals. This way you’ll discover more places you wouldn’t have seen otherwise and make the most of it.

There’s just a few ways you can start to incorporate walking more into your daily life. Walking is really easy. Finding an excuse for jogging is simple, but finding an excuse for taking a short walk is almost impossible.

Take a 5 minute walk every day for a week and see how you feel afterwards.

It’s a great way to start getting healthy!

Many of our clients who we have treated have been kind enough to share some of the photos they have taken whilst out walking, once we got them back active and pain free. See what you can find in the local area just by getting out and moving!
